Denim on Denim

indigo 2

Mastering the denim on denim trend can be quite tricky if you have never done it before. Trust me, it took me a few outfit changes to finally find the perfect balance. I found that the key is having the shades and textures be so different that you can hardly tell that they are both denim. Either go for super dark on top and light on bottom, or super dark on bottom and light on top. Anything in between can make you look like you're wearing a Canadian tuxedo.... which is fine, if you're into that... but most people aren't comfortable enough with this trend to go that far.

Above is an example I put together to help you all master the denim on denim fad. What do you think? Would you wear this? Send your pictures of your denim on denim outfits to mass.musings@gmail.com and you could be featured on the blog!

Day to Night

work it! 4

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just go straight from work to happy hour or dinner and not feel like you're either over dressed, or just over what you're wearing? I often times bring a change of clothes to wear out after work because by the end of the day I'm tired of my outfit and how I feel in it. Thus, my inspiration.

This Rag & Bone dress is perfect because it has a simple silhouette, and the leather pocket adds an unexpected detail to make it a little more bad-ass. For work, definitely pair it with tights as the dress is on the shorter side, and stick to simple black heels. I chose to accessorize with bright, statement jewelry because it not only adds extra oomph, but it also draws the attention to your face, and adds polish to an otherwise all black outfit.

To change this from work wear to happy hour, simply take off the tights, spruce up your hair and retouch your makeup and you're ready to go. Because the jewelry is funky and colorful, and the dress is short and flirty, you don't need to worry about looking overly corporate. Extra Bonus: this Michael Kors bag is structured enough that you can easily throw your hair brush, makeup, and tights in with your wallet and keys and no one will even know.

And for some FEEL GOOD on this lovely FRIDAY!

I thought I would do something a little differently today. I have been watching numerous videos on YouTube since I started working at my job. It was never a problem until about 3 months ago when I realized something slightly embarrassing... I am way too emotional. People have always told me that my empathy towards other is my best and worst quality. Let me tell you... after the past 3 or so months, I've realized they are right.

Here's an example: I am the Meeting Services Coordinator for a private equity firm in Boston. My daily duties consist of answering phones, expense reports, organizing and planning all internal meetings and of course greeting guests and providing customer service. Normally, my days are pretty standard and often times a little boring. Thus, why I started searching the internet for entertainment. Well, what I quickly learned was that if I watch even a remotely emotional video, you can forget any sense of composure, I'm crying. That is not an exaggeration, My friend and co-worker, Jenna, literally turned to me and said, "Kayte. Pull yourself together, we have a VIP meeting coming in 5 mins." She was right, the tears and mascara streaming down my face, while sitting at the front desk of the office, was certainly not a good look.

Regardless, I still watch these videos. I CAN'T HELP IT OKAY?! I'M JUST TRAPPED IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION, ALL THE TIME! So in honor of what has to be my raging hormones and overactive tear ducts, I give you a really awesome, feel good, cry at the front desk video to take you into the weekend. You're welcome.

( Watch it in privacy if you have that luxury. I guarantee at least watery eyes. )

Blogger Cruise w/ Tickle Me Pink Style

This past Sunday my friend Kelsey and I boarded the Odyssey for an early afternoon cruise around the Boston Harbor. The event was put on by Blog and Tweet Boston and included brunch, champagne (duh.) and of course, plenty of other bloggers to make friends with (shout out to our new friend Liz)!

While aboard, Kelsey snapped some great pictures of me having way too much fun. The views, food and company were all fantastic and I'm really looking forward to another event.

Food. That is all I'll say about this.

Taking advantage of the complimentary champagne. What better way to spend a Sunday than a blogger brunch with friends, am I right?!
This is Rowes Wharf where the Odyssey departed from. The views of Boston from the water are absolutely stunning.

Making friends. This guy was super friendly... if you couldn't tell...
Back on land and still taking pictures. Hey at least no one judged us for having a photo shoot... we were all bloggers so everyone was doing it! (**To see more pictures from the cruise, please follow me on instagram!)

Thanks again to Kelsey for an inviting me to such a great event and also thanks to Blog and Tweet Boston for having us! If any of you get the chance to take an Odyssey cruise, you absolutely should. Great service, great people, great time.

Workin' for the Weekend... even though it's only Tuesday.

work it! 3

The weather is finally turning colder and that means it's time for warmer fabrics and and darker colors. What does that mean for the office space? Longer hemlines, opaque tights, and you betcha!... tortoise shell glasses.

I built this outfit around the great H&M sweater dress. I love simple lines and long sleeves as they lend themselves perfectly to a simple necklace and sparkly earrings. Throw on some J.Crew, ankle strap heels and pick up a plum colored, leather bag and you are ready! Another work outfit conquered.

GUEST POST: Regina of Fashion Yard

I am super excited to be guest blogging here on mass.musings!
I wanted to share some of my must have makeup products that I used for a fun Saturday night out.

My all time favorite is a classy cat eye paired with false lashes and bright lips...to make sure your makeup stays on throughout the night a necessary step is prepping the skin first.
I love using a BB cream because it is not heavy on skin but yet creates a flawless texture that helps makeup to go on smoother and last longer. Contour your cheekbones and apply a peachy or pink blush and finish with your favorite lip gloss. This nighttime look is dramatic yet super easy to do.
I hope you enjoyed this post.

Note from Kayte: Make sure to check out and follow Regina on her blog! She has great style and content, you won't be disappointed!
J.Crew Fashion Week- Spring 2014

It happened again. J.Crew came in for the win with the new Spring 2014 collection (If only I could have been there... *sigh*). I'm not quite sure why I am so obsessed with everything J.Crew does, but in my mind, Jenna Lyons can do no wrong. I mean just look at those beautiful colors and unexpected, yet perfectly paired patterns! The best part about this line is that I would actually wear most of these outfits in real life. So don't mind me... I'll just be at my computer screen swooning and drooling over J.Crew... per usual.

Vince Camuto button down shirt / MuuBaa zipper pencil skirt / Valentino black t strap pumps / BREE briefcase, $390 / Marc by Marc Jacobs see through watch / Adia Kibur necklace / Accessorize jewellery

Dressing like a professional but still wanting to be fashionable is something that I think most women struggle with. Do you wear the trendy skirt (that you know looks totally amazing) and risk judgement from your boss? Or do you play it safe (and absolutely boring) and stick with a navy pant-suit? I don't think that there is a right or wrong answer to these questions, but I would argue that balance is paramount.

For this outfit, I went for it and chose the trendy pencil skirt. I think that it spices up the outfit, without going overboard. Paired with a tucked in, simple button down shirt and funky t-strap pumps, this outfit is office appropriate and perfect for after work drinks with co-workers.

I chose to keep the jewelry simple, but also made sure that it spoke for itself. No need to go overboard when you are already wearing bold pieces for the work place. Now all you need to do is grab a briefcase big enough for all of your paperwork and you're ready for the 9-5 grind! Get after it ladies!
