work work work

Now that I am working at a company that has a much more casual dress code, I've been trying to think of innovative ways to be stylish yet functional at work. Because my duties no longer include greeting clients and essentially being the face of the company, I can dress down and be more comfortable. I know that there are some of you out there in similar companies so I thought I would curate some great items to be productive and professional in the work place.

Jeans are work appropriate if paired with a nice sweater or blouse. Try to pick something with visual interest as it pulls the outfit together without having to add layers and copious amounts of jewelry. I also think it's fun to add in a simple metallic flat to dress up the look a little. Lately, my go to jewelry has been very minimal. Don't get me wrong, I still covet my collection of statement necklaces but sometimes it's nice to just wear a simple chain and stud earrings.

Never underestimate the power of a sleek, structured bag. Not only are they super fashionable, but they can hold much more than meets the eye (and typically they keep everything more organized than a slouchy tote bag). Fill yours with unique and fun desk accessories and you're ready for work! How amazing is this octopus coffee mug? I think that's going to be my next desk purchase.

cubicle

Today marks day 2 of my new job! So many new and different things compared to my last that I can't even begin to list them. What I can tell you is that I have my own cubicle to decorate however I want to! So far I only have a plant and a vase with a fake sunflower in it but, hey, it's better than nothing right?

Over the next few weeks as I begin to really settle in and get a handle on my training, I will be taking pictures of my new workspace to show on the blog. If you too are in the process of making your cubicle more homey (I mean we do spend most of our day in it after all) then perhaps the examples above will give you some inspiration.

In other news, I am in the process of revamping the blog layout again (I won't stop until it is perfect). It's going to take a little while so please pardon my appearance if you see any weird changes before the final product. Thanks and Happy Thursday!

Katie - example 1

A few weeks ago, my friend Katie texted me in a panic. She had just gotten hired at a new company that required a more corporate dress, much different than her teaching job with AmeriCorps. Knowing that feeling all too well, I decided the best thing to do was make her a series of outfits so that she could have guidelines while she shopped. This is one of the outfits I came up with.

I chose to pair a larger scale plaid with a sleek, neutral pencil skirt. Pairing a top that is a little more casual with a structured, stereotypical corporate skirt keeps the outfit professional, but allows for comfort and movement. I kept the jewelry simple but couldn't resist these adorable blue platform pumps. I may have to snag a pair myself!

If you're like Katie and in need of some office inspiration, please email me at mass.musings@gmail.com. I would love to help you out and style some outfits as examples!

Day to Night

work it! 4

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just go straight from work to happy hour or dinner and not feel like you're either over dressed, or just over what you're wearing? I often times bring a change of clothes to wear out after work because by the end of the day I'm tired of my outfit and how I feel in it. Thus, my inspiration.

This Rag & Bone dress is perfect because it has a simple silhouette, and the leather pocket adds an unexpected detail to make it a little more bad-ass. For work, definitely pair it with tights as the dress is on the shorter side, and stick to simple black heels. I chose to accessorize with bright, statement jewelry because it not only adds extra oomph, but it also draws the attention to your face, and adds polish to an otherwise all black outfit.

To change this from work wear to happy hour, simply take off the tights, spruce up your hair and retouch your makeup and you're ready to go. Because the jewelry is funky and colorful, and the dress is short and flirty, you don't need to worry about looking overly corporate. Extra Bonus: this Michael Kors bag is structured enough that you can easily throw your hair brush, makeup, and tights in with your wallet and keys and no one will even know.

Workin' for the Weekend... even though it's only Tuesday.

work it! 3

The weather is finally turning colder and that means it's time for warmer fabrics and and darker colors. What does that mean for the office space? Longer hemlines, opaque tights, and you betcha!... tortoise shell glasses.

I built this outfit around the great H&M sweater dress. I love simple lines and long sleeves as they lend themselves perfectly to a simple necklace and sparkly earrings. Throw on some J.Crew, ankle strap heels and pick up a plum colored, leather bag and you are ready! Another work outfit conquered.
