VALENTINE'S DAY IDEAS

Struggling with what to do for your boyfriend/girlfriend/best friend/ random person that you love? Well have no fear my lovely readers, I'm here with some unique ideas for Valentine's Day so that you don't have to think, you just have to do.

* I'm a huge fan of giving experiences instead of physical gifts. Don't get me wrong, my Christmas present from Drew for the past two years has been a shopping trip to J.Crew but that's besides the point. He and I also love to go to concerts and go on trips together. In my experience, the best way to try something new is to use a site like Groupon or Living Social. They have great deals on things like spas, ballroom dancing, concerts, paint ball, and more. If you and your Valentine like to do new things, this is the way to go.

* If you're in the creative mindset, or want to make something meaningful and not spend a ton of money, I would recommend DIYing your gift. By putting that much time and effort into your Valentine, you're showing the level of commitment you have to the relationship/ friendship. *Bonus, if you are in a new relationship or just getting close to a friend, making old school Valentine's (think elementary school poems and candy) is a great and hilarious way to go.

* Cook. I can't even tell you how thrilled people are when you cook for them. I love having a homemade meal prepared for me and I love preparing one for other people. It's a great way to spend time with someone and put a truly personal touch on the evening. If you need recipe ideas, click here.

Hopefully you found some Valentine's Day inspiration by reading this post. If you have any other amazing ideas or stories you would like to share, I would love it if you posted them in the comments!

P.S. If you're feeling kind of blah about Valentine's Day, please refer to my post last year. Also entertaining if you want to see how amateur my blog was when I first started.
A Little Punky

punk aldo

Sometimes, I'm feeling a little edgier than others. What do I do when those moments strike? I break out my distressed jeans and add a little leather and a graphic T. ALDO has some pretty great accessories and shoes so I used them as an inspiration for this punkish outfit. I'm also loving this vest from Forever 21- super cute and versatile!

What do you think? Would you get a little punky and wear this outfit? I'd love to hear your opinions!

The Hunt

THE HUNT

J.Crew navy blue top, $105 / Plaid button up shirt / Marc by Marc Jacobs blue skinny jeans, $125 / Wellies boots, $305 / Longchamp zipper top / Monogram pendant necklace / Juliet & Company white pearl jewelry / Tory Burch tech accessory / Ray-Ban folding sunglasses, $265

It's almost time for The Hunt! This Saturday, October 19th, I will be trekking down to New Jersey for a day of drinking, socializing, and watching some horses race... or something. Really I'm just excited to see all of my friends that I haven't seen in ages (shout out to Gettysburg!). What does one wear to such an event? Easy, just grab your jeans, hunter boots and some version of flannel and you're good to go. I know I'm going to be rocking my newest obsession, my field jacket. For other ideas, visit Tuckernuck's new article for their take on Hunt fashion.

I'm super excited and I can't wait to post pictures from the weekend! Send me yours for this weekend's Photograph Something Challenge for a chance to be featured on the blog!

Ballerina/ Tulle Skirts

Lately I've been craving a good tulle skirt. Maybe the combination of my ballet training and the current trend are the reason, but regardless, I want one and I want it right now. Below are some great examples of how you can style a great ballerina skirt without it looking costume-ish. Let me know what you think! Would you rock this trend?

Furry Friday

fur vest

If you know me at all, you know that I absolutely love a good fur vest. I think they are fun and fashionable, and can complete an outfit without looking like you tried too hard. The only downfall is that fur vests can be quite pricey. So, in order to alleviate sticker shock when shopping for the perfect one, I have given four examples in different price ranges.
1) H&M is a great store for many reasons. First of all, they have on trend clothes at a fraction of the cost. Secondly, the clothes tend to last longer than some of their competitors. In my mind, that is always a plus. I love this fur vest that they have for only $30!

2) American Eagle is admittedly not a store that I go to very often but I've noticed a few hidden gems tucked away in the racks. This lighter colored vest they have for $67 is a little more expensive but gives the same look to an outfit. The style is a bit different but I think it works if you pair it with dark wash jeans and a simple top.

3) Madewell is one of my favorite stores, so it should be no surprise that I love the fur vest they manufactured. This one is nice and simple, providing a clean silhouette. A bit expensive at $118 but it's good quality so you can keep it for several years.

4) Calypso's fur vest may be my favorite one but it's also the vest to splurge on. At $595 it's not exactly affordable, but I love how it drapes and the texture and color is perfect. If you have been in the market for a fur vest for a while now, and feel like really investing in this statement piece, I say go for it. It is gorgeous after all!

Turtlenecks!

snuggle up!

Finally, the weather seems to be consistent and now we can all officially break out those wonderfully comfortable, turtleneck sweaters! If we have to be covered instead of in our sundresses, we might as well be comfortable and cute right? Right!

I've put together a collection of some of my favorite turtlenecks. These are great because they can either layered or worn alone. Currently my favorite was to rock a turtle neck is alone, but under my awesome J.Crew field jacket. Adding a jacket or blazer to an outfit as a completer piece, really makes the outfit more polished and put-together.

Here are some great styles that can be paired with essentially anything for the perfect fall outfit:

1) J.Crew Collection Cashmere turtleneck sweater
2) Mango Cable-knit turtleneck sweater
3)Vionnet Alpaca and silk-blend turtleneck sweater
4) TIBI Peekaboo turtleneck sweater
5) Lauren by RL Cable-knit and buttoned turtleneck sweater
6) Helmut Lang Asymmetric Rib turtleneck

*all of these styles are suggestions to splurge on. Get creative and find more affordable versions to complete your fall wardrobe!

Denim on Denim

indigo 2

Mastering the denim on denim trend can be quite tricky if you have never done it before. Trust me, it took me a few outfit changes to finally find the perfect balance. I found that the key is having the shades and textures be so different that you can hardly tell that they are both denim. Either go for super dark on top and light on bottom, or super dark on bottom and light on top. Anything in between can make you look like you're wearing a Canadian tuxedo.... which is fine, if you're into that... but most people aren't comfortable enough with this trend to go that far.

Above is an example I put together to help you all master the denim on denim fad. What do you think? Would you wear this? Send your pictures of your denim on denim outfits to mass.musings@gmail.com and you could be featured on the blog!

Day to Night

work it! 4

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just go straight from work to happy hour or dinner and not feel like you're either over dressed, or just over what you're wearing? I often times bring a change of clothes to wear out after work because by the end of the day I'm tired of my outfit and how I feel in it. Thus, my inspiration.

This Rag & Bone dress is perfect because it has a simple silhouette, and the leather pocket adds an unexpected detail to make it a little more bad-ass. For work, definitely pair it with tights as the dress is on the shorter side, and stick to simple black heels. I chose to accessorize with bright, statement jewelry because it not only adds extra oomph, but it also draws the attention to your face, and adds polish to an otherwise all black outfit.

To change this from work wear to happy hour, simply take off the tights, spruce up your hair and retouch your makeup and you're ready to go. Because the jewelry is funky and colorful, and the dress is short and flirty, you don't need to worry about looking overly corporate. Extra Bonus: this Michael Kors bag is structured enough that you can easily throw your hair brush, makeup, and tights in with your wallet and keys and no one will even know.

Workin' for the Weekend... even though it's only Tuesday.

work it! 3

The weather is finally turning colder and that means it's time for warmer fabrics and and darker colors. What does that mean for the office space? Longer hemlines, opaque tights, and you betcha!... tortoise shell glasses.

I built this outfit around the great H&M sweater dress. I love simple lines and long sleeves as they lend themselves perfectly to a simple necklace and sparkly earrings. Throw on some J.Crew, ankle strap heels and pick up a plum colored, leather bag and you are ready! Another work outfit conquered.
