EARTH DAY | MASSMUSINGS x TOBEBRIGHT

Today's post is extremely special. Not only does it feature a killer giveaway (make sure you read the whole post!) but I'm collaborating with my long lost soul sistah, Tilden from To Be Bright. I met Tilden via Lucky Community after I saw her style posts and wanted to wear every single outfit she wore. I'm not one to be bashful so I stalked her blog and emailed her, knowing that she would be super cool. Luckily my instincts were right and we've since become friends - we are even planning a trip to NYC together this summer!

Tilden's blog started as an online portfolio where she would occasionally feature personal style posts. Over time these posts gained more notoriety and she claims that this helped steer her blog in a different direction. Now she blogs mostly about fashion and "the occasional lifestyle post". I love that Tilden shares my affinity for connecting with other bloggers and learning form their success. "[My] favorite thing is the opportunity to create partnerships and friendships with others that are genuinely passionate about the blogging industry".

One of the things that Tilden and I found that we have in common is a love of laid back style and connecting with nature. Hence, our guest posting feature in honor of Earth Day! We have both featured earth tone inspired looks to honor the day and lead into our awesome and charitable giveaway.

GUEST POST: RULES FOR THE MODERN GIRL

Hi everyone!  I'm Christine from Rules for the Modern Girl, and I'm really excited to be guest posting here on Mass Musings!  I met Kayte in December at the Boston Bloggers holiday party -- we started chatting and realized we had a lot in common.  Some of the more interesting things I learned were that we both were swimmers in college, and we both want to host a tea party! Living north of Boston I don't get into the city as much as I'd like for blogger events, but Kayte and I have stayed in touch via our blogs, email, and Instagram!

Shirt: Madewell, sold out (similar)
Jeans: Gap
Shoes: DV by Dolce Vita
Sunglasses: Prada
Necklace: Kensie
Midi Rings: Francesca's

This past weekend I stayed close to home in Newburyport, but I did get out to enjoy some of the warm 45 degree weather!  I definitely took advantage of it by taking some outfit photos without a heavy coat, because I know the snow and cold will be coming back soon!

xx Tine

How wonderful is her blog? I've been so happy to keep in touch with this wonderful blogger and we have so many things in common on our "list." Make sure you follow her on social media and keep your eyes peeled for some more collaborations!

Hi everyone! Today I did a guest post for A Daily Dose of Vitamin D! I was featured discussing versatile holiday attire for the upcoming weeks! Thanks to Dariel and I hope you enjoy it :) With the holidays quickly approaching I've gotten many questions regarding proper attire for such events. Have no fear, I'm here with outfits that you can use for multiple occasions!

guest post on vitamin c

I know that Thanksgiving is falling right around High School Reunion time. You want to look nice and presentable for your family, but of course you need to look like a million bucks for all of those people you haven't (or have...) seen in years. These two outfits examples are perfect for either occasion. Both ensembles include leather which immediately dresses up an outfit. I love the subtle edginess of leather but I also love that it can look ultra feminine when paired with softer fabrics. The Madewell peplum shit with those emerald pants are to die for! I chose to go with pants because I'm from Maine, and it's wicked cold up there. While you could most definitely decide to wear black tights and a festive skirt, I think pants are best as they are easy to transition from day tonight, and can be more easily dressed down after a family party.

While these outfits are just examples of what you could wear, I have created some guidelines for your holiday planning:

 1) Leather is always a great choice.
2) Try to incorporate red and green in a non-cheesy way. It's easiest to do this by choosing a pattern or unique jewelry.
3) The shoes make it! Go for something flirty and heeled: heels are appropriate for both a family party and a get together of friends.
4)Timeless jewelry adds just the right amount of sparkle
5) Make sure you have a solid clutch or bag that's big enough to hold all of your essentials. Not fun getting caught in inclement weather without gloves and chap-stick!

I hope you have enjoyed my post and I would love to see your pictures on instagram of your holiday outfits! I'll be following the hashtag #massmusings all winter, so make sure you capture your creative brilliance! Thanks again Dariel and Happy Holidays!

Guest Post: Dariel of A Daily Dose of Vitamin D

Hi I’m Dariel and I blog over at A Daily Dose of Vitamin D! Today I’m sharing a fall floral arranging DIY with all you Mass Musings readers.  Thanks to Kayte for having me!

Materials:
2 types of bigger statement flowers (5 stems of each) - I used Zinnia and Mums
2-3 types of secondary flowers (8 stems of each) - I used smaller Mums, Marigold, Rebecciah
Greens/Filler (a bunch) - I just clipped some leafy wildflower
Scissors, Paper Towel, Vase

Prep:
Measure how tall you want your bouquet, clip stems 1 inch longer than that at a 45 degree angle.  Strip off leaves that will fall below the waterline in your vase (simply slide a damp paper towel down over the stem).

Arranging:
Hold one of your statement flowers by the stem in your non dominant hand, about ¾ of the way up.  Always hold it securely in one spot and add stems at a slight angle - this will give it a nice full shape.  Use your dominant hand to add to the arrangement.  When adding blossoms, group types of flowers in odd numbers so that you can have balance that isn’t overly symmetrical.  For example, I selected one Zinnia, then surrounded it with 3 smaller mums.  You’ll end up with small groups of statement flowers supported by secondary blooms.  This is how you build the bouquet, adding filler here and there to keep it full.  Don’t worry if the “adding” step takes 15 tries...that’s totally normal.  I usually start over at least twice.  Tip: Every once in a while spin your bouquet around so that you know your arrangement looks good from all angles.  Once finished you can trim your stems more, if necessary (but always at a 45 degree angle!).

This arrangement is full of fall wildflowers from my mother’s garden in NH, so I wanted to keep it loose and wild - looking.  When putting together a more abstract arrangement, the bouquet should have a shape that resembles an ‘S’-again looking for balance that isn’t too perfect.  And feel free to add blooms once the bouquet is already in your vase...let’s be honest there aren’t real rules when it comes to floral arranging.

All these flowers bloom into early November, so go get some and try it out before the cold weather sets in!

Note: If you’re making an arrangement that is more manicured, snip your stems after you’ve put together the arrangement.  You’ll want wiggle room so that you can pull and push the blooms into the right shape (also go ahead and tie the arrangement when you’re done so that it holds its shape).

*How cute is this post? Dariel is fantastic and so is her blog! Make sure you check out her posts on things like recipes, fashion, and other fabulous DIY projects like this one. Thanks so much for posting Dariel!

xoxo
GUEST POST: Regina of Fashion Yard

I am super excited to be guest blogging here on mass.musings!
I wanted to share some of my must have makeup products that I used for a fun Saturday night out.

My all time favorite is a classy cat eye paired with false lashes and bright lips...to make sure your makeup stays on throughout the night a necessary step is prepping the skin first.
I love using a BB cream because it is not heavy on skin but yet creates a flawless texture that helps makeup to go on smoother and last longer. Contour your cheekbones and apply a peachy or pink blush and finish with your favorite lip gloss. This nighttime look is dramatic yet super easy to do.
I hope you enjoyed this post.

Note from Kayte: Make sure to check out and follow Regina on her blog! She has great style and content, you won't be disappointed!
American Bassweight - Philly Steps Up - GP: Andrew Tobin

Eight years ago, the American Dubstep Ambassador Joe Nice and the homie Dave Q coordinated with the UK heavyweights to bring a new element to the New York club scene: Dub War. Its impact on the growth of bass music in the US has been tremendous.

Nowadays, the bassweight has the Big Apple pinned down. This past weekend bass music fans from all corners of the world gathered in Brooklyn to celebrate Reconstrvct XIV: Our Second Anniversary. For the past two years, Reconstrvct mastermind Luke has worked with Joe Nice (Sub.fm, Dataset) and Fourth Temple prophet True Nature to organize top quality productions featuring the most talented minds in international bass music. Reconstrvct sits at the helm of the North American bass culture and its success has inspired a serious boom in sub frequencies in Brooklyn. Thanks to the continued efforts of a dedicated community, New York is now home to multiple other events committed to providing proper sub frequencies: Fourth Temple, Sub:verse, Descent and Epicenter.

The proliferation of deep dubstep and other forms of bass music is not a phenomenon isolated to New York. Its influence has spread far beyond the Five Boroughs to include communities in multiple major cities in the Northeast. Cooperation has been instrumental in the building of a tight network in the American Northeast. Boston heads have been getting their share at Bassic since 2007. Deep Sessions DC started to rep the Bass Party in our nation’s capital in the spring of 2012. More recently, Philadelphians have joined the growing community with their own event, Native Frequencies. Back in May, Joe Nice came to Philly to share the decks with Native Frequencies resident DJs Werm, L.T. Smash and Kellen303. Needless to say, we’ve been been itching for more.

On Friday August 2nd, Native Frequencies will host its second event, at the balcony of the Trocadero (1003 Arch Street). The night will start off with sets from Werm, Lt. Smash and Kellen303. Selector Moldy (Bassic, TUBA) and low-end architect EshOne (Elkbeats, Dataset) will be coming in for the weekend to join the party. Moldy has been holding down the fort in Boston at Bassic for the past six years and continues to put out mind-bending DJ sets that truly push the limits of bass music. His original productions are always top notch and have received international praise. EshOne, a jack-of-all-trades, plays what he wants, when he wants and never fails to get the crowd moving. A master with the mixer, he will be bringing an array of top-secret dubs. Expect the unexpected. The party starts at 9:00PM and will go until the Trocadero closes at 2:00AM. Philly is really in for a treat. Tickets will be sold at the door ($10) but advance tickets ($7) are available now on Ticketfly.(http://www.ticketfly.com/event/322609).

Native Frequencies will also be participating in the Tsunami Bass Experience Multiversity’s EPICENTER:03: Wave Particle Duality, a community event intended to educate, facilitate and celebrate their mission of providing the finest in bass culture appreciation. This will be an all-American bass party, featuring low-end representation from New York, Philadelphia, Boston and California.  On Saturday August 10th Moldy, EshOne, True NatureTsunami Bass, Werm, Lt. Smash & Kellen303 and host MC Zulu will take command of the Tsunami Bass Sound System at the House of Yes in Brooklyn. Come check out the inside of the interactive TBE~WaVe~LABoratory, which features a body-sonic dance floor for maximum bass along with interactive visual immersion by Cinemoeba. Forth Temple's COH and Matt Phillips will also be crafting live art during the festivities. Everyone is welcome to come celebrate the sub with Tsunami and friends for their last event at the current House of Yes (342 Maujer Street). All proceeds from this event will be used expressly for the establishment of the TBE Multiversity of Bass Culture Appreciation.

Seriously though, subs are bumping all over the American Northeast. There has been an onslaught of top tier events recently and the foundations have been laid for some very exciting developments in the future.

Get stoked. Big tings a comin’.
